A Journey Toward Authenticity
Welcome to A Journey Toward Authenticity! You may be aware that October is a month for many online challenges. Challenges such as, 31 Days of Fitness, and 31 Days of Praying for Your Spouse, 31 Days to Decluttering, etc. I’m not sure what makes this month so special but I’ll play along. I have been challenged to participate in a 31-day writing challenge so I chose to create A Journey Toward Authenticity.
What does authenticity look like, and why are so many of us afraid of it?
Being authentic starts with being honest, vulnerable, and real with ourselves. But in reality, it’s more than that. In order to be truly authentic, we need to be honest, vulnerable and real with everyone else too. Maybe that’s where most of us get stuck.
It’s easier to be real in the safety of our own hearts and minds. Opening ourselves up to others is a whole new ballgame. Yet, as I examine my own life I realize I’m desperate for authenticity ~ from myself and from others. I hope that as I encourage you on this journey toward authenticity, that I will become more authentic too.
Although this is a 31-day journey, the real journey is never-ending. We can’t “arrive” at authenticity. It is a daily decision and requires a lot of practice. So today, I’ll start this series off by being real with you.
I am the one who needs this 31-day challenge… God has called me as a writer and speaker but it has been a struggle for me to write anything for the past year, maybe even longer. Yes, I have been busy, but I have allowed the busyness to keep me from writing. Why?
Being vulnerable is scary.
If I am to lead others in becoming more authentic, then I need to be authentic. And like I mentioned earlier, opening ourselves up to the judgment and rejection of others is hard. This fear has paralyzed me. It stops me from being true to myself and having the confidence I need to answer God’s call on my life.
Still, a small voice compels me forward despite the fear. Being authentic is trusting God knew what He was doing when He called me to write and speak. I didn’t choose me. He did. And He had already given me everything I need to get the job done before He even called me. Except obedience. That is my responsibility.God gave us everything to complete our calling. Except obedience. That is our responsibility. #write31days #truth #AuthenticLiving #DoNotBeAfraid Click To Tweet
Because this journey is never-ending, we will never get to a place where we’ll have all the answers. No one can become an expert at being authentic because every day we confront circumstances that will require us to make a choice. Some days I am fearless. Other days I’m not. But I will commit to sharing the lessons I learn along the way, both the good and the bad. I will share how I maintain my true self through the ups and downs of daily life and how I love myself and others through it. That’s what it’s all about.
Has God called you to do something but you’ve let fear stop you? Romans 11:29 says, “For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.”When God calls you, He will equip you. He does not call the qualified. He qualifies the called. #write31days #truth #AuthenticLiving Click To Tweet
I don’t think you happened to read this today by chance. God is calling you to live the life He has planned for you. Deep down, you too, are desperate for authenticity and He knows it. It’s exhausting pretending to be someone you’re not. And when you do, you not only dishonor yourself, you dishonor God as well.
He created you to be YOU! And He needs you to be you to the world.
May the next 31 days encourage all of us to be more authentic on a daily basis so we can confidently answer God’s call on our lives!
Throughout the series I will focus on four areas where we all can be more authentic: self, workplace, marriage and parenting. My goal is to offer tips, advice, encouragement and some assignments to help you examine where you are on your own journey.
I hope you enjoy this 31-day journey toward authenticity. Don’t forget to subscribe to my newsletter in the sidebar so you will receive each day’s post. If you missed some posts, you can find all of them HERE. I look forward to hearing from you as you share the insights and lessons you’ve learned along the way!
